OVERVIEW:

The Hell Lighting system was a set of two strips of addressable RGB LEDs that ran down the all-frosh alley (hell*) in Blacker House. The strips controlled by an arduino mega, and powered by a desktop power supply. The system had 4 or so patterns, including color wheel which was re-implimented for the modern system.

The original project was crippled by a series of poor design decisions valuable engineering lessons and was taken down before the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year when the system fell into disrepair. Now that we have a new frosh class, and a new power supply, the time has come to put it back up again!

In it's final form, the new system is composed of four LED strips running down hell (10m, 300LED) controled from purgatory and powered by a 600watt modular power supply in the cabinate above the microwave.

*so named for the quality of its AC during the summer.

Status:

The system is now fully operational, and has been online, with minimal interruptions, for the better part of two full years. I will likely add more patterns, clean up the mounting a little bit, and - of course - flesh out this page, but other than that this project is considered completed for now.

Patterns:

For the moment, the system is running a fairly small set of patterns on an arduino mega. It has a similar setup to the old system, with two buttons for pattern switching and a pot for pattern control. The current pattern list is as follows:

  • Hue

  • Purple

  • Red Dot

  • Pulsing

  • Stars

  • Rule 110

  • Worms

Contributions:

This project is principally a collaboration between myself and Aiden with support from Francesco as well as the frosh class of 2017-2018. More recently, we have had several patterns added by other members of the caltech community. If you would like to add a pattern yourself or see the code the github is here: https://github.com/Whillikers/Hell-Lighting
